Session Information

Beyond the ‘Racial Stalemate’

Friday, June 23, 2017 (the session will be offered four times during the day; see below for options)

Hyatt Regency McCormick, Grant Park/CC 12C

Description: In his 2008 speech on race titled “A More Perfect Union,” then-candidate Barack Obama described a “racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years.” He suggested that, if we don’t do something different, “nothing will change.” Now, more than eight years later, we’re still stuck. How do we move forward? Using an approach known as “racial healing,” facilitators will lead participants through a process that invites story-telling, vulnerability and deep listening. The goal is to provide leaders with a tool currently used by hundreds of organizations to help uproot the flawed belief in a racial hierarchy. These sessions are facilitated by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.

Free registration is required and spaces are limited; please choose only one of the following sessions.

  • 8:00-9:30 a.m.: Facilitated by Dushaw Hockett (executive director, SPACEs—Safe Places for the Advancement of Community and Equity) and Mee Moua (racial healing practitioner, former president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice)
  • 10:00-11:30 a.m.: Facilitated by Monica Haslip (executive director, Little Black Pearl) and Mike Wenger (lecturer, George Washington University)
  • 12:30-2:00 p.m.: Facilitated by Dushaw Hockett and Mee Moua
  • 2:30-4:00 p.m.: Facilitated by Monica Haslip and Mike Wenger
